Sin has consequences.
Forgiveness is about rescuing us from the eternal consequences.
4. I’m Sorry ...
Forgive us our sins ...
We have an Advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ the Righteous One. 1 John 2.1
An advocate - one who stands beside us and speaks for us, a friend who will be there for us when we get it wrong.
Being a friend is a two way thing.
If you stand by me, I am a client not a friend.
If I stand by you, you are a client not a friend.
We are friends when we stand by one another.
How can we expect to be forgiven if we do not forgive?
When we breathe in we take from the world.
When we breathe out we give back to the world.
We cannot breathe in without then breathing out.
We cannot breathe out without then breathing in.
Otherwise we die.
Forgiveness, like the breath, is a two way process.
The Advocate stands beside us to plead our case - not for our innocence, for humanity is not innocent - but for forgiveness so that we can try again.
Yet we cannot receive that forgiveness if we do not also offer it.
Jesus forgave even those who drove in the nails.
Father forgive us, and help us to forgive.
...as we forgive those who sin against us.
Our lives are not a private,
self generated possession;
they neither depend on, nor arise from,
the biology and reproductive processes
through which they are expressed in this age.
We are alive now,
and will be alive in the resurrection,
because we are alive to God and He to us.
He loves us into life,
and his love alone sustains us,
for in Him is LIFE,
and that life is the light of all.
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
